Medication adherence is defined by the globe Health Organization as "the degree to which the person’s behavior corresponds with the agreed recommendations from a health care provider."

1. Though the terms adherence and compliance are synonymously used adherence differs from compliance. Compliance is that the extent to which a patient’s behavior matches the prescriber’s advice.

2. Compliance implies patient obedience to the physician’s authority,3-5 whereas adherence signifies that the patient and physician collaborate to boost the patient’s health by integrating the physician’s medical opinion and also the patient’s lifestyle, values and preferences for care.

There are several varieties of non adherence but most frequently the categorization is indisputable, and there's a degree of overlap. the primary is understood as primary non adherence, within which providers write prescription but the medication is rarely filled or initiated. this kind is often called non fulfillment adherence.
