Summary of Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act
- This Act could also be called the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, 1971.
- It extends to the entire of India.
- It shall get force on such date as the Central Government may, by notification within the Official Gazette, appoint.
When pregnancies could also be terminated by registered medical practitioners :-
- Notwithstanding anything contained within the Indian legal code (45 of 1860), a registered medical practitioner shall not be guilty of any offence thereunder Code or under the other law for the nonce in force, if any pregnancy is terminated by him in accordance with the provisions of this Act.
- Subject to the provisions of sub-section (4), a pregnancy could also be terminated by a registered medical practitioner,
- where the length of the pregnancy doesn't exceed twenty weeks, if such health professional is, or
- where the length of the pregnancy exceeds twenty weeks but doesn't exceed twenty-four weeks just in case of such category of woman as is also prescribed by rules made under this Act, if not less than two registered medical practitioners are, of the opinion, formed in good faith.
